Frequently Asked Questions

Welcome to the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) page of Bocklet Orthodontics! Here, we’ve compiled answers to some of the most common inquiries we receive from our patients. If you have a question that isn’t addressed here, please don’t hesitate to reach out to our friendly team for assistance.

What age should my child first see an orthodontist?

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children have their first orthodontic evaluation by the age of 7. By this age, enough permanent teeth have erupted for orthodontists to evaluate the bite and identify any potential issues.

Do braces hurt?

You may experience some discomfort or soreness after getting braces or after adjustments, but it’s usually mild and temporary. Over-the-counter pain relievers and orthodontic wax can help alleviate any discomfort. Our team will provide you with tips and guidance on managing any discomfort throughout your treatment.

How long will I need to wear braces or aligners?

The duration of orthodontic treatment varies depending on factors such as the complexity of the case, the type of treatment, and individual response to treatment. On average, treatment with braces can take anywhere from 12 to 36 months, while treatment with clear aligners may range from 6 months to 24 months. During your initial consultation, we’ll provide you with a personalized treatment plan and timeline.

Can I still play sports with braces?

Absolutely! While it’s essential to take precautions to protect your braces during sports activities, you can continue to participate in your favorite sports. We recommend wearing a mouthguard to minimize the risk of injury to your teeth and braces. Our team can provide you with a custom-fitted mouthguard for optimal protection.

How often will I need to come in for appointments?

The frequency of your orthodontic appointments will depend on your treatment plan and the stage of your treatment. Typically, patients with braces will need to come in for adjustments every 6 to 8 weeks. Patients undergoing treatment with clear aligners may have fewer in-office visits, but regular check-ups are still necessary to monitor progress and make any necessary adjustments.

Will I need to follow any dietary restrictions with braces?

While you can still enjoy most of your favorite foods with braces, it’s essential to avoid hard, sticky, or chewy foods that can damage your braces or get stuck in them. We’ll provide you with a list of foods to avoid and offer tips on maintaining a braces-friendly diet throughout your treatment.

Can adults get orthodontic treatment?

Absolutely! Orthodontic treatment is not just for children and teenagers – it’s for patients of all ages who want to achieve a straighter, healthier smile. We offer a variety of treatment options tailored to meet the unique needs and lifestyles of adult patients.

Are aligners as good as braces?

Yes. Clear aligners are a tool used to straighten teeth. In the same way that a skilled artist uses a paintbrush to create a masterpiece, an orthodontist uses clear aligners to create beautiful smiles. In the right hands, clear aligner treatment can deliver amazing results. At Bocklet orthodontics, our orthodontists have treated hundreds of Invisalign and 3M Clarity Aligner cases. We are skilled at crafting beautiful smiles with these tools.
