You want to give your child the best possible start for a healthy, confident smile.
Early orthodontic treatment, also called interceptive orthodontics, helps guide proper jaw growth, create space for permanent teeth, and address concerns at the right time.
At Bocklet Orthodontics in West Ashley, our children’s orthodontists take a thoughtful, proactive approach to monitoring growth and supporting your child’s smile every step of the way.
Early orthodontic care can make a meaningful difference in how your child’s smile develops.
When should my child see an orthodontist?
The American Association of Orthodontists (AAO), along with our board-certified doctors, recommends that children have their first orthodontic check-up around age 7.
From ages 7–11, your child’s jaws are still growing and developing, making this the ideal window to identify concerns early and guide the teeth and jaws into proper alignment before problems become more complex.
If treatment is needed, it may include a specialized appliance, braces, or clear aligners, depending on your child’s unique needs.
Benefits of Interceptive Orthodontics
Prevent More Complex Problems Later
Early treatment allows us to identify and address developing orthodontic issues, such as crowded teeth, bite misalignments, and jaw discrepancies, before they worsen. By intervening at the right time, we can often reduce or prevent the need for extractions, jaw surgery, or more complex treatment later on.
Guide Healthy Jaw Growth
During childhood, the jaw is still growing and more responsive to treatment. Early orthodontic care allows us to guide growth into a more balanced, functional position, improving bite alignment and overall facial harmony.
Support Long-Term Oral Health
A properly aligned bite is easier to clean and maintain. Early correction can help reduce the risk of tooth decay, gum disease, and uneven wear, supporting healthier smiles for years to come.
Build Confidence as They Grow
When children feel good about their smile, it shows. Addressing concerns early can help prevent self-consciousness and support confidence during important developmental years.
How do I know if my child needs braces or clear aligners?
If you’ve noticed any of the following signs, it’s time to schedule your child’s first orthodontist appointment:
- Crooked, crowded, or spaced teeth
- Early or delayed loss of baby teeth
- Difficulty chewing or biting
- Mouth breathing
- Thumb sucking or tongue habits
- Jaw shifting, popping, or clicking
- Protruding (“buck”) teeth
Every child is unique, and not all concerns require immediate treatment, but an early evaluation gives you clarity, guidance, and peace of mind.
